Express Your Needs, Don't Say "I Want" Over and Over : Alternatives to Say "I Want"

 


In daily life, we usually express our needs to everyone. The most general expression that we perpetually used is "I want". However, using the same words frequently will make our language considered as not interesting and feel boring. Furthermore, it may indicate that we still have the narrowness in using a variety of word choices, particularly when we try to express our needs.

To overcome the narrowness, there are several alternative words that can substitute the phrase "I want" as a form of expressing needs. 

Formal Alternatives

1. Wish (very formal)

= To want something or to want to do something 

     Example: 

  • I wish to buy a fascinating action figure.
  • They wish to accomplish their assignment as soon as possible. 
  • Trey and Vienna wish to play a console game tonight. 

2. Would like (very polite)

     Example:
  • I would like a delicious taco in the hotel restaurant. 
  • We would like the meal for our lunch today.
  • Martha and Eddie would like a lovely holiday next month. 

Would like + infinitive

  • Maybe you would like to enjoy the vacation with us. 
  • I'm not sure I would like to go to Vienna next week. 
  • Lucy and Gordon would like to study together in the class after they had lunch. 

3. Desire

=To want something strongly

     Example:

  • The school provides numerous clubs that you will desire.
  • We desire to have a new club room.  
  • The student council chairman desires to hold a culture festival soon. 

4. Long

=Tall or high (Adjective)

=To have a strong desire or wish (Verb) 

To long for something

     Example:
  • What I long for is to be happy forever.
  • They longed for a new decision to change the rule of law. 

To long to do something

    Example:
  • I have long to wait this moment to come again. 
  • He longed to watch the concert directly. 

5. Fancy

= To want something or to want to do something 

     Example:

  • Liza is fancy a juice at the present. 
  • Did you fancy living in your own dorm when you were a college student?

Non-Formal Alternatives

1. Be in the mood for something

     Example:
  • I am in the mood for doing some exercise this morning.
  • They must be in the mood for doing dance practice today. They're enthusiastic. 

2. To feel like something or doing something

=To have a desire to do something

     Example:

  • Akaba feels like singing "Wish Song". 
  • Mei feels like doing the homework tonight.
  • They feel like having a splendid picnic this week. 

3. Have a craving for something

=To have a strong desire to do or have something

      Example:

  • I'm craving for spaghetti carbonara for the dinner tonight.
  • That's why they're craving for a new S-tier character in the game. 

4. Be dying for something or to do something

=To be eager and really want it.

     Example:

  • Gusion is dying for that superior car. 
  • Lesley was dying to have a new doll. 
  • We were dying for marvelous stuff at the event. 
5. Could go for something

=To want to do something but not really intended.

     Example: 

  • She could go for a couple of coffee tonight at the cafe.
  • Ray could go for a billiard on upstairs of this building.
